Sources familiar with the matter stated that the attacks so far were "technically unsophisticated" and have failed to cause successful breaches of these specific systems.

Water and wastewater targeted

Particular concern is raised by the targeting of water and wastewater treatment infrastructure. According to the report, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) detected attacks in July against more than 100 water and wastewater management entities. These infrastructures are considered critical for the security and operation of American cities, making any digital penetration attempt particularly sensitive.
