Federal Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz was infuriated and reacted strongly to the news of the visit by the former head of the government of Germany, Gerhard Schröder, to the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, on the occasion of his birthday.
According to a report by Clash Report citing statements from the government spokesperson of Germany, Merz stated that he was «shocked» and characterized the visit of Schröder to Putin as «immoral».
The position of the SPD
For his part, the member of parliament of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Ralph Stegner, argued that Schröder is one of the very few Germans who possess «access to Putin», noting that the visit can be considered successful if it «advances the achievement of peace by even a single millimeter».
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin had described former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as the preferred negotiator for a dialogue between Moscow and Europe, emphasizing that leaders who «said various bad things» about Russia are not suitable for this role.
