Panic and scenes of chaos unfolded at Bondi Beach in New South Wales, where two armed men opened fire, spreading death.
The death toll from the armed attack has reached 10, including one of the perpetrators, and 11 people are injured, according to the latest tally confirmed by the police.
At the time of the attack, thousands of people were on the beach, while at its northern end an event of the Jewish community had just begun to mark the first night of the Hanukkah holiday.
The second perpetrator is also injured and has been arrested, as have two police officers been injured.
Meanwhile, the Australian prime minister convened a meeting of the National Security Committee.
For deeply painful images spoke, on his part, the Premier of New South Wales, Chris Minns, noting that “the police and emergency services are responding and the public should follow official instructions”.

Albanese (Australian prime minister): Shocking and painful scenes

“The scenes at Bondi are shocking and painful,” stated the Prime Minister of Australia, A. Albanese, in an announcement.
“The police and emergency teams are on site and are working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person who has been affected. I have just spoken with the Commissioner of the AFP and the Premier of New South Wales. We are working with the police and will provide further updates once more information is confirmed. I urge people in the area to follow police instructions,” the Australian prime minister added.
He also convened a meeting of the National Security Committee of the Cabinet.

The incident

The attack, according to the Australian state television network ABC, occurred at the northern end of the beach, while there is still no confirmation regarding the target, although at that specific location an event of the Jewish community had just begun to mark the first night of Hanukkah.
At the time of the attack, thousands of people were on the beach.
The perpetrators reportedly disembarked from a van and opened fire on the crowd.

Reactions from Israel

The Israeli President Isaac Herzog, speaking at an event in Jerusalem, denounced that “our sisters and brothers in Sydney were attacked by despicable terrorists in a very brutal attack against Jews who had gone to light the first candle for Hanukkah at Bondi Beach”.
“If we were deliberately targeted in this way, it is an event of a scale that none of us could have imagined. It is something horrific,” stated Alex Ryvchin, an official of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, speaking to Sky News. He also added that his communications adviser was injured in the attack.

One perpetrator dead, the other injured

One of the alleged perpetrators was injured by police gunfire and the other was arrested, as reported by the newspaper Sydney Morning Herald, noting that there are many injured, while the television networks Sky and ABC broadcast video showing people lying on the ground.

Videos posted on the X platform show people on the beach fleeing as gunshots and police sirens are heard.
“We have been informed of an evolving security situation. We urge people in the area to follow updates from the New South Wales police,” stated earlier a spokesperson for the Australian prime minister.
