Krasnikov (Russia): Comet 3I/ATLAS is not from the solar system, but it is not an alien spacecraft

Many sought to create hype that it was an extraterrestrial ship, even if it was just a fake story, recalled the head of the Russian Academy of Sciences

The President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Gennady Krasnikov, has unveiled the mystery behind the highly discussed comet 3I/ATLAS. Its unusual behavior was explained by the fact that it did not originate from our solar system and, therefore, had not been heavily exposed to the solar wind.

"There has been a lot of noise and bold claims regarding comet 3I/ATLAS. Comets in our solar system have clearly defined orbits because they have been orbiting the Sun for a considerable time, and their surfaces have been 'smoothed' by the solar wind. But comet 3I/ATLAS did not come from our solar system and was thus not strongly affected by our Sun," stated Gennady Krasnikov.
"In this regard, it behaved somewhat unusually—it changed its rotation speed and its color. But from a scientific perspective, everything was explainable and understandable," added Krasnikov.

Many people simply wanted to create a sense of excitement here, suggesting it was an alien ship—even if it was just a fake story, they wanted to believe in the sensation, the head of the Russian Academy of Sciences reminded.
"But returning to the scientific view, everything has been calculated for a long time—the trajectory, the degree of danger posed by the comet—and it is clear that it is now moving further away, toward Jupiter, and is leaving our solar system," Krasnikov concluded.

NASA announced that the Hubble Space Telescope captured the comet on July 21, 2025, when it was 450 million kilometers from Earth. The interstellar object, 3I/ATLAS, was visible from Earth in early November.
Several foreign sources have speculated that the comet could be an extraterrestrial spacecraft. Russian cosmonaut Sergei Kud-Sverchkov, who stated he does not believe the comet is artificial, has challenged this theory.

Russian President Putin was also asked about the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, which passed its closest point to Earth on December 19, during a live broadcast. The head of state initially joked that it was a secret weapon that Russia would use only in the most extreme cases.
Subsequently, Putin clarified that Russia opposes the deployment of weapons in space and that 3I/ATLAS is a comet, and Russian scientists are aware of its status. Putin joked about the comet’s "mission" to Jupiter and announced that it would leave the solar system in early 2026.
