"The war in Iran will trigger a monstrous wave of migration"
New Democracy and PASOK are now micro-medium parties, claims Meletis Meletopoulos, a doctor of the University of Geneva, professor, and author, as he analyzes the latest shifts on the political stage. Speaking on the show MAGGA on BankingNews.gr television (BNtv), Mr. Meletopoulos responds to Antzy Stathatou regarding the plans of former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.
As the leader of the "Declaration of the 91" in July 2025—a movement calling for the immediate mobilization of Samaras and Karamanlis to create a new center-right entity—the professor asserts: "Samaras is an experienced political figure, and this is no time for experimentation." He further cites confidential polls that reportedly "give the former Prime Minister a share of 16-21%."
No Samaras–Karystianou alliance in sight – Mitsotakis has completed his cycle
However, Meletis Meletopoulos does not see a collaboration between Samaras and Maria Karystianou as a likely scenario. "Karystianou has genuine intentions, as her child was killed by a failed state. Yet, she is in a polling decline, and we remain unaware of the officials who would flank her," he notes. The Tempi tragedy and the handling of the pandemic are key areas where "the Mitsotakis government has failed miserably," the professor maintains, adding that "Mitsotakis has completed his cycle."
The war in Iran will trigger a monstrous wave of migration
Analyzing the consequences of the war in Iran, Meletis Meletopoulos argues that the fallout will not be exclusively economic, as a "monstrous wave of migration toward Europe and Greece" is expected. While he views the deployment of frigates and fighter jets to Cyprus as a positive development, he admits he fears it is not a "permanent activation of the unified Defense Doctrine between Greece and Cyprus. We sent the frigates by chance."
Finally, he points out that the Turkish threat remains a perennial danger to Hellenism. On the occasion of the National Anniversary of March 25th, he emphasizes that the slogan of Kolokotronis, "fire and axe to the worshipers of the conquerors," is "more relevant than ever!"
