Rapid developments - Russia–China joint statement causes terror in US: Hegemony over, Putin and Xi built global axis
For Washington, the image of Putin and Xi signing dozens of strategic agreements constitutes a serious geopolitical challenge

The two-day visit of the Russian president Vladimir Putin to Beijing on 5/19 - 5/20/2026 was not a typical diplomatic meeting. It was a powerful geopolitical statement toward the West and mainly toward the United States: the era of unipolar American dominance is now openly challenged by two superpowers appearing more coordinated, more determined, and closer than ever. The talks of Vladimir Putin with Xi Jinping resulted in more than 40 cooperation agreements, strategic texts, and joint statements, confirming that Moscow and Beijing are not simply building an alliance of interests, but a new geopolitical axis with global ambitions. And the message was clear: Russia and China consider that the international system built by the US after the Cold War is now reaching its limits.

The chemistry between Putin – Xi and the message to the West

The visit concluded with a symbolic tea ceremony between the two leaders, in an atmosphere described by Chinese and Russian media as a "meeting of old friends". Xi Jinping spoke of "rich results" and of "historical significance" in the relations of the two countries, while Putin characterized the talks as "substantial, deep, and exceptionally productive". This image was of immense importance. In a period where the United States is trying to isolate Russia through sanctions and pressure, Moscow appears not only to maintain strong international relations but to strategically deepen its cooperation with the largest economic power of Asia. Even Western media were forced to admit the difference in atmosphere between the Putin–Xi talks and the corresponding contacts of Donald Trump with the Chinese president. The Singapore Straits Times characterized the Putin–Xi meeting as a "candid conversation of old friends", while CNN admitted that Xi Jinping presented the RussiaChina relationship as a "force of stability amidst chaos", leaving a clear barb against the United States.

The end of the American monopoly of power

The most significant aspect of the talks was the joint declaration in favor of a "multipolar world" and a "new type of international relations". This is essentially a direct challenge to the global order built by the US after 1991. Xi Jinping was clear: "China and Russia must contribute jointly to the creation of a fairer system of global governance". This phrase constitutes a direct challenge to Washington. China and Russia consider that the United States uses its economic, military, and political power to unilaterally impose rules, sanctions, and geopolitical pressures on the rest of the world. Beijing and Moscow appear now as the basic expressers of a different model of international relations, based — as they argue — on state sovereignty, polycentricity, and resistance to "hegemony".

The energy alliance of Russia – China

Of particular importance were also the economic agreements. Vladimir Putin announced that bilateral trade reached nearly 240 billion dollars in 2025, proving that Western sanctions failed to isolate the Russian economy. On the contrary, Russia managed to reorient a large part of its economic and energy strategy toward Asia. Moscow committed to continue seamlessly the supplies of oil, natural gas, and LNG to China, reinforcing even further the energy axis between the two countries. The United States and Europe attempted to strike Russia through energy sanctions. However, the result seems to have been the acceleration of the Russo-Chinese strategic convergence.

China and Russia against Western alliances

Xi Jinping repeated that China and Russia do not operate through military blocs of the NATO type and that their cooperation does not target third countries. This reference was not accidental. Beijing and Moscow seek to present their own model of cooperation as a counterweight to the American system of alliances, which they consider aggressive, interventionist, and destabilizing. Russia and China have been accusing the United States for years of using NATO, sanctions, and economic pressure as tools for enforcing their global dominance. In this context, the approach of MoscowBeijing acquires clearly geopolitical characteristics.

The US sees the new axis being reinforced

For Washington, the image of Putin and Xi signing dozens of strategic agreements constitutes a serious geopolitical challenge. The United States tried in recent years to contain Russia and China simultaneously, considering both as basic strategic adversaries. However, this policy seems to have led to the opposite result: to the creation of a stronger Russo-Chinese bloc. This cooperation is no longer limited to energy or trade. It extends to transport, infrastructure, financial transactions, diplomacy, and the strategic perception of the world. The Chinese "Belt and Road" plan and the Russian initiatives of Eurasian integration are beginning gradually to connect, creating an alternative geo-economic space outside American influence.

The message of Putin to the West

The visit of Putin to Beijing also had a strong symbolism. Despite sanctions, pressures, and Western isolation, the Russian president was received in China with all the honors of a head of state and with visible personal warmth from Xi Jinping. The message was clear: Russia is not isolated. On the contrary, it constitutes a basic pillar of a new global correlation of forces that directly challenges Western primacy.

A new world is being formed

The cooperation of Russia and China does not necessarily mean the creation of an official military alliance. However, it signals something perhaps even more important: the gradual building of a new global system of balances. A system where the United States will no longer be able to function as the sole global regulator. Moscow and Beijing appear now determined to accelerate this transition. And as long as the US continues to invest in sanctions, geopolitical pressures, and strategic confrontation, the cooperation between the two great Eurasian powers is reinforced further. It was the public demonstration that the world is changing — and that Russia and China intend to play a leading role in the new era that is emerging.

Lavrov: Russia and China are building a new global axis against Western pressure

Russia and China are continuously reinforcing their strategic cooperation, sending a message that they are not going to succumb to the pressures of the West. This was stated by the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov in his interview with the Chinese Shanghai Media Group. Lavrov stressed that Moscow and Beijing seek a multipall κόσμο based on balance and not on the "hegemony" of a group of countries, leaving clear barbs against the United States and the West. He underlined that neither Russia nor China desire conflicts, but they will decisively defend their national interests. "We do not want the harm of anyone and we do not want to fight with anyone. But we will firmly defend our legitimate rights and interests," he characteristically stated. At the same time, he repeated that Taiwan constitutes an "integral part of China", fully supporting the position of Beijing. Lavrov characterized the relations of Russia and China as "the most stable relations between two great powers in the modern world". According to him, the cooperation of the two countries is based on mutual respect, on the common vision for the international order, and on strong economic bonds. The Russian minister also argued that Moscow and Beijing are building a strong technological axis that helps Russia face Western sanctions and restrictions.

Larry Johnson (Former CIA): Putin and Xi Jinping are building a new global order without American dominance

The meeting of Vladimir Putin with Xi Jinping in Beijing is considered by many analysts a clear message to the West that Russia and China are accelerating the creation of a new multipolar global system, independent of American influence. The former official of the CIA and of the American Department of State Larry Johnson stated to TASS that the visit of Putin, although brief, highlighted the seriousness and the depth of the relations between Moscow and Beijing. According to him, the two leaders sent a "clear message" toward the United States and the West that Russia and China are determined to create a new international order of things without Western dominance in the economy, finance, politics, and security. Johnson underlined that the approximately 40 agreements signed between the two countries constitute the result of long preparation and deep strategic cooperation. At the same time, he compared the Putin–Xi talks with the contacts of Donald Trump with the Russian side, noting that there was no corresponding level of substantial cooperation between Washington and Moscow.
