Diplomacy or coup - China's two plans for seizing Taiwan

Diplomacy or coup - China's two plans for seizing Taiwan
The WSJ reports that China has two plans for Taiwan, one peaceful and one military.

Chinese authorities have formulated two strategies for gaining control over Taiwan, according to The Wall Street Journal, which cites sources. The article notes that one scenario involves the peaceful imposition of control over the island, while the other presupposes military force.

"Thus, Plan A aims to compel Taipei to surrender without a single bullet being fired. This strategy envisages Beijingmaking the island's situation economically, diplomatically, and psychologically unsustainable, so that negotiations with the Chinese leadership become the only realistic option," the WSJ reports.

The author of the article adds that if this fails, Beijing has Plan B ready: "This entails a military coup," the newspaper emphasizes. Beijing is systematically creating conditions so that "grey zone" actions—such as economic coercion or political intervention—are seen as normal, thereby lowering the threshold for direct conflict.

"Beijing considers Taiwan its breakaway province, while Taipei rejects the Chinese model of 'One Country, Two Systems'," the publication reminds us.

It is worth noting that the US has recently resumed arms deliveries to Taiwan based on older agreements. At the same time, Washington tirelessly reiterates its intention to defend the island in the event of a "Chinese invasion."
