A resonant intervention regarding the stance of the West toward Moscow was made by the Vatican, with Cardinal Pietro Parolin warning that the isolation of Russia cannot lead to a resolution of the Ukrainian issue. The head of diplomacy of the Holy See called on the European Union to support the creation of a direct communication channel with Moscow, arguing that only through dialogue and mutually beneficial compromises can a sustainable security framework be formed for all sides. Specifically, the Secretary of State of the Vatican (head of government), Cardinal Pietro Parolin, called for the creation of a dialogue channel with Moscow, underlining that the European Union should also support this effort based on the diplomatic principle of mutually beneficial solutions that ensure security and prosperity for all. "Russia should not be isolated. A specific dialogue channel must be established because only through dialogue can solutions be found, including for the Ukrainian crisis," he stated, according to Vatican News.
"Solutions that benefit both sides"
Cardinal Pietro Parolin stressed that the diplomacy of the Holy See is based on seeking win-win solutions that serve both sides. "This is the path we constantly support through our diplomacy: a mutually beneficial solution. That is, every solution should truly benefit both sides. I believe that if we follow this path, there will no longer be a situation where one side prevails over the other or where one side is destroyed by the other," he noted.
Ukraine and humanitarian initiatives at the center
The head of Vatican diplomacy recalled that Holy See policy does not aim at achieving immediate results, but at maintaining open communication channels and gradually building conditions for peace. He did not specify the timetable for the planned visit to Moscow by the President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, which is expected at the end of the month. He confirmed, however, the Vatican's intention to continue humanitarian initiatives aimed at bringing the two sides closer together, contributing to reaching a ceasefire, and promoting negotiations and dialogue. It is recalled that in August, the Secretary for Relations with States of the Vatican, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, visited the Russian capital.

Referring to European Union policy toward Russia, Pietro Parolin reiterated the importance of maintaining communication channels. "A dialogue channel must be established," he stated, according to the ANSA agency, adding that "a platform needs to be found that will guarantee the security of all and allow for the development of a solution." In early September, Pope Leo expressed hope that contacts between Russia and Ukraine would yield results, highlighting the need to continue peace negotiations. During the visit of Vatican Foreign Minister Paul Gallagher to Moscow in August, the Pope's position was conveyed that "the war must end" and that peace requires de-escalation, dialogue, confidence-building measures, and arms control. Gallagher also emphasized to Russian leadership that "the conflict cannot be resolved through military means" and called on all sides to demonstrate a willingness for meaningful negotiations.
