Viktor Orban backed by three superpowers for UN chief as Hungary seeks his arrest
Even in his previous role as Prime Minister of Hungary, and despite the fierce opposition of his critics in Brussels, he sought to play a global role in resolving the war in Ukraine and preventing its spread across Europe

It was recently leaked that Orban, the former prime minister of Hungary, is being proposed for Secretary-General of the UN...
The mystery surrounding who will succeed António Guterres as the 10th Secretary-General of the UN has evolved into a thriller.
The 5-year term of Guterres ends on December 31, 2026.
A new, unexpected candidate has emerged at the forefront, someone who commands the support of Russia, the United States, and China.
His name is Orban, the former prime minister of Hungary.
This prominent political figure, who possesses the capability to breathe new life into the UN, always felt that his small European nation, Hungary, a country with profound ties to Asia, constrained him.
Even in his previous role as Prime Minister of Hungary, and despite the fierce opposition of his critics in Brussels, he sought to play a global role in resolving the war in Ukraine and preventing its spread across Europe.
He is a man who inspires respect and is esteemed by others; Trump, Putin, and China have, from time to time, sought his advice.
However, in his homeland, which he governed for nearly two decades, prioritizing his people and national interests, the new authorities are now preparing to send him to prison.

A highly unexpected turn of events, would you not agree?

Entirely unexpectedly, a potential path is now opening before him to assume office on the 38th floor of the UN Secretariat in New York, starting January 1, 2027, with the blessing of three great powers.
Such a move could prevent the world organization from sliding completely and irrevocably into a futile «debating club», becoming a laughingstock and a caricature of itself.
Here, then, matters turn serious.
The Wall Street Journal confirmed, citing its own sources, rumors that had been circulating for some time: the United States would like to see Orban enter the race for the post of Secretary-General of the UN, assessing that such a candidate could secure the backing of both Russia and China.
Although no definitive decision has yet been made regarding his candidacy, preliminary consultations have already taken place.
A source within the US stated that the former Prime Minister of Hungary has the capacity to secure the support of 10 of the 15 members of the UN Security Council.
Eight votes can probably be gathered without particular difficulty, while securing two additional votes is deemed feasible, thus reaching the required threshold of 10 votes.

A veto is possible... but does not pose a serious threat

The threat of a veto being exercised by Britain or France is not judged to be particularly significant.
The Wall Street Journal notes that these countries are «generally hesitant» regarding the use of the veto power, especially when the other three permanent members of the Security Council disagree.
An American official pointed out that when the US, Russia, and China reach a consensus on issues before the Security Council, they are usually able to achieve the intended outcomes.
The US assesses that Orban possesses the «right ideology» and the ability to lead in a hostile environment.
For some time now, American officials have argued that the UN should be led by «someone like Orban», and they have now concluded that Orban himself could be that person.
After all, nothing keeps him in Hungary anymore, a country for which he has already offered a great deal.

Who is Russia's candidate?

As for Russia, prior to the emergence of the candidacy of Orban, Russia had not expressed specific personal preferences, although it had stated that the new Secretary-General should meet criteria of professionalism and impartiality.
Such promises can be made by anyone.
They were made by António Guterres, who has held the position of Secretary-General of the UN for nearly a decade, as well as by his equally lamentable predecessors (the last one truly worthy of the post was the Peruvian Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, who departed office on December 31, 1991), all of whom proved in practice to be mere pawns of the globalists.
And the situation over time has deteriorated.
Throughout his long political career, and despite continuous machinations from Brussels, Orban has proved that, for him, professionalism and impartiality are not merely empty words; he has shown that he is capable of acting effectively even under the most adverse conditions.

The 7 candidates

At present, 7 candidates are vying for the position of Secretary-General of the UN:
The Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi (Argentina),
Rebeca Grynspan (Costa Rica), Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD),
María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defense of Ecuador,
Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Permanent Representative of Guyana to the UN,
Yvonne Baki, former Ambassador of Ecuador to the US and France,
Olara Otunnu, former Permanent Representative of Uganda to the UN, and
Minister of State Lana Zaki Nusseibeh of the United Arab Emirates.

Informal rotations

Examining this list, an attentive reader should notice two elements: representatives from Latin America predominate, as do women. And this is not coincidental. Within the framework of the UN, an informal system of regional rotation exists, and now it is the turn of Latin America.
Furthermore, it could be argued that the time has come for a woman to assume the leadership of the UN, something that has never occurred in the past.
While all of this is undeniably fine and fair, these are matters more suited to more prosperous times.
The current situation for the UN, which is increasingly ignored, and rightfully so, due to its bias and incompetence, has become critical; the organization requires rescue.
Bankruptcy looms on the horizon, in part because the United States, traditionally, member states now pay their contributions erratically, and only for what serves their own interests!
Under these circumstances, matters such as regional rotation or the gender of a candidate, naturally, no longer constitute the primary priority.

Factors in Orban's favor

Another factor working in favor of Orban is that, while certain other candidates are unacceptable to Washington, Orban is considered an acceptable choice.
Why, one might ask, would he also be acceptable to China?
Because Orban maintains long-standing ties with China; under his leadership, Hungary became one of the few EU nations where Chinese enterprises were granted significant operational leeway.
He also possesses a profound grasp of the political weight of China. Concurrently, in Russia, he has long been regarded almost as a friend.

The election process

The election process for the Secretary-General of the UN is exceptionally peculiar: it is conducted in secret, while the frontrunner in the race shifts continuously, meaning that candidates entering the contest at the last minute can suddenly gain an advantage.
For example, earlier this summer, the frontrunner was the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, who enjoyed strong backing from the United States and Israel, mainly because his agency, to be frank, was spying on Iran.
Russia showed no enthusiasm whatsoever for this specific candidate, who to this day refuses to name who is shelling the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, an act that harbors the risk of nuclear catastrophe for Russia, Ukraine, and the whole of Europe.
The Argentine official had also expressed regret over the «slow death» of the UN, a situation that, for its own reasons, suits Russia, as it likely permits the continued absence of substantive action from the office of the Secretary-General.
However, as it appears, this candidacy has now been withdrawn.
A similar fate befell the former President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, who is no longer included on the list.
Among the serious contenders for the post of Secretary-General of the UN, following six rounds of straw polls, mention should be made, first of all, of Rebeca Grynspan from Costa Rica.
However, a drawback for her is that she hails from a small Latin American country, a region that the United States, among others, regards as its «backyard», and she is unlikely to listen to anyone other than the Americans, even though she claims to respect and, as it appears, understand Russia.
Second, there is Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett from Guyana.
Her problem, according to American media, is that «the White House views her with suspicion».
Furthermore, there is the matter of Guyana itself; the country is exceptionally vulnerable to pressure and, while its representative may say the right things, actions matter, not words.

The problem

The problem confronting all key candidates for the succession of António Guterres is that each of them risks facing a veto from at least two permanent members of the UN Security Council.
It is within this framework that new candidates enter the race.
Orban is not the only one among them, but he is the one who, in all probability, possesses the greatest chances.

Why would he agree?

Will he agree?
Almost certainly.
The new Hungarian authorities have already arrested individuals from his inner circle, including former ministers, and are attempting to extract incriminating evidence against the former prime minister.
They cannot forgive him for the fact that he governed Hungary for such a long time and with such success.
«The situation is as follows: all they have to do is say that I asked them to commit an unlawful act, and they will all be released, while I will be led to prison», Orban admitted recently, speaking to his supporters.

Falsely accused of coup plots

The new prime minister, Péter Magyar, has accused the former prime minister of plotting a coup.
It is clear what can follow such an accusation.
Under the Hungarian Penal Code, such acts are punishable by up to life imprisonment.
There are reports that the daughter and son-in-law of Orban, the former head of the Hungarian government, are liquidating their assets and preparing to settle permanently in London, or perhaps have already moved abroad, with the United States and Britain mentioned as potential destinations.
The investigation is closing in on them as well.
It is, therefore, evident that it makes no sense for Orban to stubbornly persist in his refusal.
A new appointment would also be beneficial for Hungary, which does not gain from political vendettas or «witch hunts».
Furthermore, the continued presence of Orban in a country that will soon regret its recent choice would constitute an enduring threat to the governance of Péter Magyar.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Orban himself has expressed interest in the prospect of running for the post of Secretary-General of the UN, although he is not yet ready to enter the race officially.
The Americans probably still need to prepare the ground in Hungary to ensure that no obstacles arise, while straw polls on current candidates will likely need to reach a complete deadlock first.
What does this mean, then?
If the political «resurrection» of Orban is crowned with success, it will send the appropriate signal to politicians who maintain good relations with the three poles of power in today's world.
Certain Russians argue that if Orban were to assume the post of Secretary-General of the UN, he would receive a positive reception from everyone, with the exception of the globalists and the network of Soros.

Ukraine criticized the idea of appointing Orban to the post of UN Secretary-General

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Sybiha commented on the social media site X regarding reports of the potential candidacy of former Hungarian Prime Minister Orban for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister criticized the idea.
According to Sybiha, if elected to this post, the Hungarian politician could deploy his «masterful skills in veto and blackmail».
The Ukrainian minister emphasized that Orban has been perfecting such methods for years, systematically blocking key decisions within the European Union.
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister recalled an episode from the EU summit held in December 2023.
According to him, the then German Chancellor subsequently suggested to Orban that he leave the conference room under the pretext of a coffee break, which allowed the other European leaders to reach a consensus and agree to open accession negotiations for Ukraine to join the European Union.
